Great Aves offers volunteer placements overseas, through our overseas volunteering website YouVolunteer. Volunteers get the chance to work hands on at one of our projects, and provide valuable assistance to the schools where we work.
The Arajuno Road Project (Amazon Teaching Project) was began work in March 2008. Much of the equipment that is donated to the organisation, and the funds that are given through the Buy a Book Campaign are used along the 6 schools of the Arajuno Road in the Amazon Jungle of Ecuador. Volunteers work with our coordinators to teach English in the schools, which is a much needed skill in an area reliant on tourism. Our presence at the schools also allows the teachers to teach smaller groups of children, giving them a more focused education. Volunteer placements are also available for Spanish only speaking volunteers, who assist teachers with lesson plans.
The equipment provided at the project, has help double the annual budgets spent at the schools, and allowed the children to improve their studies in all aspects of the curriculum. Great Aves has also introduced creative learning to the schools, using interactive lessons to help teach the children. Results have been positive in all subjects at the schools, even subjects the project does not directly teach. The children are now some of the most advanced in the English language in the region.
In addition to work done in term time with the schools, the Arajuno Road Project also runs summer schools, during summer vacations. The activities at the summer schools are creative and fun, based around lateral thinking and team building exercises. English classes to adults and college and university students have also been a success.
